How to Choose a Chain Length
Updated: 2026-09-21
How length is measured
Chain length is the full loop, clasp included, in inches — the U.S. standard. The same number sits differently depending on height and build, so treat these as a guide, not a rule.
| Length | Approx. |
|---|---|
| 14 in | 36 cm |
| 16 in | 41 cm |
| 18 in | 46 cm |
| 20 in | 51 cm |
| 24 in | 61 cm |
Where each one sits
14 in is a choker at the base of the neck. 16 in rests around the collarbone — the most popular length. 18 in falls just below it: the classic all-rounder and the easiest for a pendant. 20 in sits on the upper chest, and 22–24 in drops lower, ideal for layering or wearing over a sweater. Each of our chains shows its available lengths on its page.
Measure it yourself
Two easy ways: measure a chain you already like from end to end, or drape a piece of string where you want the chain to fall, mark it and measure. For a pendant, remember it hangs a little below the chain’s resting point.
Layering
To stack chains, leave about 2 inches between each so they don’t tangle — for example 16, 18 and 20 inches together.
